What is Respin?
A respin is an additional spin granted for free or triggered automatically by a game mechanic, during which one or more selected reels spin again while the others remain held in place. It can be awarded when specific symbols appear, offered as a purchasable option, or built into a bonus mechanic such as Hold and Win, where each qualifying symbol landing resets a counter of remaining respins.
Common forms
In many games, a respin targets a single reel that fell just short of completing a winning combination while the other reels stay locked. In Hold and Win mechanics, a set of respins runs repeatedly, resetting each time a new special symbol lands on the held positions, gradually filling the grid.
How it is triggered
Respins can activate automatically when a condition is met, such as landing two Scatter symbols out of three, or they may be sold as an optional in-game purchase. When purchased, the bet used is typically the same as the current spin stake.
Difference from free spins
Unlike free spins, a respin usually applies to only part of the grid with remaining reels locked. It is a distinct mechanic with its own payout rules rather than a repeat of a full standard spin.
