Payline
What is Payline?
A payline is a predefined path across the reels of a slot machine where a matching symbol combination must land to award a win. Classic machines feature a single central line; modern slots can offer 10 to more than 100 paylines running in diagonals or zigzag patterns, each evaluated independently on every spin.
Fixed and variable paylines
Some machines use a fixed number of paylines that are always active. Others let the player choose how many to enable, which affects both the total bet and the frequency of wins. Reducing active paylines lowers the cost per spin but also reduces the chances of hitting a winning combination.
Reading a payline
Wins are evaluated left to right on most machines, starting from the first reel. An isolated symbol in the middle of the reels only pays if it is part of a sequence beginning at reel one on that specific line. The exact rules are available in the game’s paytable.
Beyond classic paylines
Many modern games replace paylines with “ways to win” or “cluster pays” systems, which evaluate wins differently. Those alternative mechanics are described in their own glossary entries.
