Hold and Win

What is Hold and Win?

Hold and Win is a bonus mechanic in which special symbols, typically coin tokens carrying monetary values, lock onto the grid and start a counter of three respins. Each new token that lands resets the counter to three. The round ends when the counter reaches zero or the entire grid is filled, at which point all locked values are totaled and awarded to the player.

How the round plays out

The Hold and Win bonus activates when a minimum number of coin tokens land in the same spin, often six or more. Those tokens freeze on their positions and a three-respin counter begins. If another token lands during a respin, it locks in place and the counter resets to three. This continues until the counter runs down to zero.

Token types and jackpots

Tokens can carry fixed cash values, multipliers, or jackpot labels such as mini, minor, major, or grand. Filling the entire grid usually awards the highest jackpot tier. Some variants include collector tokens that absorb the total value of all neighboring tokens.

Popularity and variants

The Hold and Win structure was widely popularized in the slots industry and has been adopted by numerous studios under different names while retaining the core respin-and-lock logic. It appears frequently in jewel-themed and retro-style slot designs.
